WHAT IS A NEUROMA, WHAT CAUSES THIS PROBLEM ? A neuroma in the foot is a benign growth that occurs when the nerves in the ball of the foot are pinched and inflamed. It is most commonly found between the third and fourth or second and third toes and adjacent web spaces of the foot.
SYMPTOMS
Symptoms may include pain, burning, tingling or numbness between the toes and on the ball of the foot associated with standing for long periods of time or increased activities.
A Morton's neuroma will not normally disappear on its own. Usually, the symptoms will come and go, depending on the type of shoes you wear and how much time you spend on your feet.
Take a look at our videos below that include the surgical removal, patient testimonial experience with injecting the 'Sclerosing agent' in the clinic, as well as custom molded orthotics to keep the pressure off the ball of the foot.

CASE TESTIMONIAL
This patient came into the office for concerns about pain and the positioning of her toes. The pain was diagnosed as a neuroma which responded to cortisone injections initially. The toe 'splaying' or spreading was actually a dislocation and Plantir plate tear. This was from an accident although this can happen with excessive force during exercise, sports, or spontaneously.
The surgery went well and this is her 8 week post operative visit. Many thanks to the representatives at www.Arthrex.com who provided the equipment from their CPR system and procedure modification we used for this unique problem.
The neuroma can be removed with minimal effort and numbness or loss of sensation is limited to the involved web space. The incision is made from the top of the foot (average 1.5cm to 3/4 inch) and sutures are removed at 2 weeks. The procedure is performed at an outpatient facility under sedation.
Partial weight bearing is allowed after 48 to 72 hours of non weight bearing.
Costs typically range from $1,500-$3,000 or more for a series of alcohol shots to help relieve pain. Surgery can cost up to $7,000 or more. A temporary solution is with therapeutic shoes and/or pads or other shoe inserts, which typically cost $500 or so.
Recovery after Morton's neuroma (neurectomy) surgery is generally quick. Typically patients are walking on the operated foot in a post-surgical shoe for 2 – 4 weeks, depending on healing. Return to shoes is 2-6 weeks after the surgery.
Your Doctor, nurse and clinician will help monitor and mange your recovery. Maintaining a healthy diet is a key step in prevention, with some of the key nutrients including:
Protein: consuming protein will greatly assist your body in healing, delivering the cells it needs for wound care.
Vitamin C: This nutrient is found in a number of fruits and vegetables and helps the body to create a protein that helps to make skin, as well as repair and heal wounds.
Zinc: Found in red meat, shellfish, spinach and nuts and seeds. Zinc helps the body structure the cell membranes that are pivotal in healing wounds.

What are the safest options for pain relief ?
As podiatrists and foot surgeons, we are committed to helping patients understand the surgery process. The type of anesthesia that we use for extremity foot surgery is very light. Patients are out and not conscious, which is what most people want to know. You are not going to wake up during the procedure.
Anesthetic is very light and very safe. The procedures are always around an hour to two hours max so there’s not as much time under sedation and henceforth, less complications and less difficulties waking up and feeling groggy or hungover.
